Three cards face down that you never see, three face up that everybody can, and a hand you play from. Beat the pile or pick it up. Certain cards break the rules on purpose: some reset the pile, some reverse who has to beat what, and four of a kind burns the lot and gives you another go.
The whole game turns on the three face down cards at the end, which you play blind, one at a time, knowing exactly how bad it will be if the number is low. Getting there first is skill. Surviving the last three is not, and everyone at the table knows it. Against the machine it runs about five minutes a hand.
